So, I wasn’t going to write this initially, as original opinions on the New York Yankees’ payroll were probably exhausted years ago. But in honor of Morlok’s birthday, I will post some thoughts. If you don’t want to read a defense of the Yanks, read this instead, the article that started our discussion.

What follows is not completely a defense of the Yanks, since arguments of this type usually devolve into pro and anti-Yankee camps. Instead, I present five myths regarding the competitive structure of baseball, none of which are completely untrue but are certainly more complicated than the conventional wisdom often suggests.
